Banbury Chap Books and Nursery Toy Book Literature - Fully Illustrated with Original Layout: Edwin Pearson
Once upon a time Jack set out to seek his fortune in the big city. But Jack gets a bit lost on the way, and when he finally comes to a big city, it is Toy City, formerly known as Toy Town. And there is a serial killer loose upon the streets. One by one, the old, rich nursery rhyme characters, who made their millions from the royalties on their best-selling rhymes, are being brutally slaughtered. The Toy City Police are getting nowhere. Bill Winkie, Private Eye, has also mysteriously vanished, leaving only his sidekick, Eddie Bear, to take care of business. But Eddie´s ready to take on the challenge and when he teams up with Jack, the two set out on a epic adventure. Not to mention a lot of heavy drinking, bad behaviour, fast car chases, gratuitous sex and violence, bizarre toy fetishism, and all-round grossness. Of a type not normally associated with Toy Town. 1. Language: English. Narrator: uncredited. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/orio/000006/bk_orio_000006_sample.mp3. In The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams, a stuffed rabbit sewn from velveteen is given as a Christmas present to a small boy. The boy plays with his other new presents and forgets the velveteen rabbit for a time. These presents are modern and mechanical, and snub the old-fashioned velveteen rabbit. The wisest and oldest toy in the nursery, the Skin Horse, who was owned by the boy´s uncle, tells the rabbit about toys magically becoming real due to love from children. The rabbit is awed by this idea; however, his chances of achieving this wish are slight. One night the boy´s Nana gives the rabbit to the boy to sleep with, in place of a lost toy. The rabbit becomes the boy´s favorite toy, enjoying picnics with him in the spring, and the boy regards the rabbit as real. Time passes, and the rabbit becomes shabbier but happy. He meets some real rabbits in the summer, and they learn that he cannot hop as they do, and say that he is not real. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gregg Rizzo. Walter Crane (1845-1915) was one of the earliest contributors to children´s literature and one of the most influential illustrators in the development of children´s colour picture books. Crane began working for Edmund Evans in 1864 producing bright, colourful children´s books which revolutionised the type of children´s books available. He created a series of ´Toy Books´ between 1865-1875 which contained fairy stories, nursery rhymes and other tales of adventures. His wonderful Japanese influenced illustrations with their bright, bold, flat colour and black outline never failed to entertain both children and adults. This book ´Mother Hubbard Her Picture Book´ is one of many ´Toy Books´, it contains the stories, Mother Hubbard, The Three Bears and The Absurd ABC. Many of the earliest children´s books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.

This new edition of the timeless classic is beautifully narrated by BAFTA-nominated actor Juliet Stevenson. When the Velveteen Rabbit first arrives in the nursery, he is snubbed by the other toys. But the Rabbit soon makes friends with the Skin Horse, who explains how toys can become ´real´, if only they are loved enough. The Velveteen Rabbit longs for this to happen until, one day, he finds that he is Boy´s very favourite toy. They play together through a long, golden summer and, even though Rabbit becomes shabbier and shabbier, he becomes ´real´ to the boy who loves him so much. The rabbits in the garden think otherwise - how can Rabbit be real when he can´t leap and hop? But when Boy is ill with Scarlet Fever, and Rabbit is thrown away, Rabbit finally discovers what it truly means to be real. As he sheds a tear, a magical fairy transforms him into a real, wild rabbit, though her parting words remind him that he was always real to the boy. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Juliet Stevenson.
